Ministry Supports Kabaka Birthday Run to Advance HIV Awareness
The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance has confirmed its support for the 13th Kabaka Birthday Run as part of national efforts to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
The 2026 run is held under the theme “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child and the Fight to End HIV/AIDS by 2030,” an initiative launched by Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga on 18th February at Bulange Mengo. The campaign focuses on engaging men to reduce new HIV infections and promote responsible health practices within families and communities.
According to national health data, Uganda continues to make progress in reducing HIV infections. However, approximately 1.4 million people are living with HIV, highlighting the need for sustained prevention efforts.
The State Minister for National Guidance, Hon. Godfrey Kabbyanga, emphasised the importance of shared responsibility. “The Kabaka Birthday Run brings Ugandans together around a shared responsibility. This year’s theme calls on individuals, especially men, to take deliberate steps to prevent the spread of HIV. As the Government, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that promote awareness and responsible behaviour.”
The run is held annually to celebrate the birthday of Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II and serves as a key platform for advancing public health campaigns.
The Ministry’s participation aligns with its mandate to coordinate public communication and use digital platforms to disseminate information on HIV prevention across the country.
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Dr Aminah Zawedde, noted that communication remains central to achieving national health goals. “We are focused on ensuring that Ugandans have access to the right information through digital and media platforms. This supports informed decision-making, which is critical in preventing HIV/AIDS.”
Uganda aims to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. The Kabaka Birthday Run continues to contribute to this goal by mobilising communities and reinforcing key prevention messages.
The Ministry of ICT and National Guidance remains committed to supporting such initiatives through coordinated communication, digital outreach, and partnerships that advance national development priorities.
