Partnerships
Helpware Uganda welcomed Dr. Aminah Zawedde, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, to their office. During her visit, Dr. Zawedde engaged in an important discussion with Helpware’s CEO, Robert Nash, and the Helpware Uganda team, focusing on the government's efforts to support and grow Uganda’s Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry.
Dr. Zawedde emphasized the government's strong commitment to building a thriving BPO industry in Uganda. She stated, “We are investing in infrastructure, skills training, and digital connectivity to attract global companies and position Uganda as a competitive outsourcing hub. With a growing workforce and targeted investments, we aim to significantly scale the industry, enabling Ugandans to work for international companies without leaving the country.”

The conversation also covered the progress of BPO operations in Uganda, highlighting the importance of communication to promote the industry, especially in light of the recently launched BPO Publicity Campaign. Helpware, a US-based company, currently employs around 300 people in Uganda and plans to expand by hiring an additional 400 employees. The meeting also discussed the need for regional branding to highlight Uganda’s rich cultural diversity and strong infrastructure as key advantages for the BPO sector.

Robert Nash, shared his excitement about the future, stating, “Helpware is proud to be part of Uganda’s growing digital economy. We’re committed to expanding our presence here and collaborating with the government to further develop the BPO sector. Our goal is to create more job opportunities for Ugandans and help position Uganda as a leading BPO destination.”
The discussion also emphasized the need to build a skilled talent pool through collaborations with universities to develop the necessary skills for BPO jobs. A media campaign was also suggested to shift global perceptions about Uganda and attract more international interest in the sector.

The Ugandan government’s support for the BPO sector is reflected in the policy approved by the Cabinet, aimed at creating a favorable environment for BPO investments. Dr. Zawedde pointed out that Uganda’s young, English-speaking population, along with its favorable weather conditions, are significant advantages in attracting global BPO companies.
Additionally, the government is expanding internet connectivity and setting up regional ICT hubs at universities, which will help create more opportunities for the BPO sector's growth. Dr. Zawedde noted that the government is also focused on projects to improve cybersecurity and ensure that young people are well-trained for the jobs that the BPO sector will bring.
