Uganda has officially launched the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which it will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania in August 2025. The launch ceremony took place at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala and was presided over by His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
During the event, President Museveni emphasized the importance of sports in uniting communities, creating jobs, and showcasing national pride. He noted that hosting CHAN provides Uganda with an opportunity to strengthen infrastructure, boost tourism, and energize the youth through local and international football.
The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, expressed gratitude to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for entrusting Uganda and its partners with the prestigious tournament. She said CHAN will position Uganda as a regional leader in sports and hospitality, and reaffirmed government support for its successful delivery.
CHAN 2024 marks the first time three East African nations will jointly host the tournament. The collaboration between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania reflects a growing spirit of regional unity and shared ambition in sports development.
Preparations for the tournament are underway. Key infrastructure upgrades, including the renovation of Mandela National Stadium (Namboole), are nearing completion. FUFA has confirmed that several national teams have already made advance visits, with logistical and administrative arrangements progressing well.
The launch event drew attendance from government officials, sports leaders, athletes, media, and fans, creating excitement across the country. Organizers have promised a vibrant tournament atmosphere, supported by strong volunteer participation, efficient transport systems, and high-quality broadcasting.
Uganda’s hosting of CHAN 2024 is expected to attract thousands of visitors, increase global visibility for local talent, and inject revenue into sectors such as accommodation, food, and tourism. With just days to go, the country is gearing up to welcome Africa’s footballing nations in what promises to be a memorable sporting celebration.
