The Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Aminah Zawedde, recently participated in a Stakeholder Strategy Meeting on Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) at the State House Investment Protection Unit. The meeting was organized by Col. Edith Nakalema, who highlighted the transformative potential of BPO in creating jobs for Uganda’s youth and positioning the country as a global hub for service delivery.

The gathering brought together influential figures in BPO from government, academia, and the private sector to discuss strategies for leveraging and promoting BPO as a solution to youth unemployment. Key topics included fostering collaboration between key players, attracting international investors, and enhancing Uganda’s competitiveness in the regional and global BPO markets. The discussions also focused on building an environment conducive to youth employment and sustainable business growth.

Dr. Aminah Zawedde emphasized the importance of effective policy implementation to support the BPO sector. She noted, “We have a policy in place with clear recommendations on how to make BPOs thrive. We must establish the right policies and create an enabling environment for any business to succeed. BPO has the potential to operate as a 24-hour service. Let us focus on generating local demand and driving growth in this sector.”

Dr. Zawedde further shared that H.E. Yoweri Museveni is deeply passionate about the potential of BPO to transform Uganda. She said, “The President believes that by leveraging technology, Uganda can create substantial employment opportunities for its youth. For any business to thrive, we must have the right policies and an enabling environment.”

Prof. William Bazeyo, Chairperson of the BPO Council, called on stakeholders to enhance public awareness of BPO and its wide-ranging applications. “BPO is not just about call centers or ICT; it extends far beyond that, touching various industries and becoming an integral part of our daily lives,” he explained.

The meeting underscored the critical need for partnerships between government, academia, and the private sector to boost Uganda’s global competitiveness in BPO. By working collaboratively, stakeholders aim to attract investors, create more job opportunities for youth, and drive economic growth across the country.
