Buhadyo Primary School Smart Classroom Enhancing E-Learning in Butaleja District
As Uganda moves toward an inclusive and sustainable digital transformation, statistics from a 2026 United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) survey show that only 20% of schools in Uganda are fully connected to electricity, digital devices, and the internet, leaving most without a fully fledged e-learning infrastructure. However, the success of the smart classroom at Buhadyo Primary School in Butaleja District, part of a pilot for the Smart Villages Project, is set to expand e-learning across schools in Uganda.
Implemented by the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance in partnership with Huawei Technologies and other stakeholders, the project has established a smart classroom to enhance e-learning. It includes large touch-sensitive screens that allow teachers and pupils to write, draw, and interact, eliminating chalkboards and microphones, as well as smart speakers that ensure clear sound and respond to voice commands. It also has a scanner for scanning and displaying question papers in real time, amongst other features.
Through this intervention, pupils at Buhadyo Primary School can now attend the same classes as pupils at Nakasero Primary School in Kampala through the e-learning platform. This has not only led to more robust and uniform syllabus coverage but also increased enrolment and participation for a school that was once, unfortunately, in an unserved and underserved community.
Even as Buhadyo Primary School soars to new heights, the project's ripple effect is touching the whole community. In addition to the smart classroom, the project includes a telecommunications tower and a solar power generation and storage system comprising 120 solar panels, each rated at 55 watts, with an output capacity of 30 kilovolts at full capacity. This powers the classroom and the nearby Buhadyo Church of Uganda; in addition, 25 households in the community are also connected to the same power source.
With the advent of power, the community is gradually witnessing socio-economic transformation through the multitude of small businesses that are mushrooming. These include, but are not limited to, shops selling refrigerated soft drinks, mobile money outlets, and a video hall.
This pilot at Buhadyo Primary School and its local community shows that the right solutions can address mountainous problems. The President, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, will officially launch the project, which will then be gradually rolled out to other unserved and underserved areas in Uganda.
